Who does what in the school computer network
environment?

Strong partnerships in the school district computer network help increase student achievement. This is document is intended to show the various partnerships needed to provide students both physical and intellectual access to ideas and information. It is not an official document of Bellingham Public Schools, but serves as a snapshot of current practice.

Responsibility: |
Responsible for all Computer Network Management, mission critical systems, technical support and computer security in district. |
Responsible for Instructional Technology & Library Media throughout district. |
Ensures access to information and ideas via computer network in the school; coordinates library & technology with classroom needs and instruction. |
Performs troubleshooting of computer & software problems. Assist staff with software and hardware questions and problems. |
Responsible for instructional use of technology to help students meet Learner Achievement Targets/ Essential academic learning requirements. |
Sets Mission, Objectives & Strategies that may involve the use of technology |

Network Equipment |
Creates specifications, selects computer equipment & peripherals, makes upgrade |
Showcases various new products that may be useful in instruction. |
Maintains file of library equipment needs and orders from recommended lists. |
Repair and/or replace defective equipment. |
Maintains file of classroom equipment needs and orders from recommended lists. |
Maintains building budget for departmental & building needs. |

Network Equipment Maintenance |
Maintains all computer equipment & peripherals on network, solving the tough problems. Deals with vendors on warranty issues. Orders parts and repairs. Consults Work Order Database before regularly-scheduled weekly visits to schools. |
Monitors status of open work orders and pending projects. Participates in prioritization of major hardware and software deployments. |
Initial troubleshooting and referral to Network
Services. |
Performs initial troubleshooting of computers in building,. Escalates repair and/or evacuates equipment as necessary. Performs regular service on all machines in building (scandisk, defrag, etc) |
Reports computer problems to library media specialist. |
Reports building issues related to technology service and support to LMS and to Network Services. |

Network Server Operation |
Sets up server structure and permissions. |
Coordinates network server training for LMS with Network Services as needed. |
Creates new server folders & permissions
as needed in the building. Manages print queues. |
Repairs/replaces defective equipment. |

Network Infrastructure |
Sets up infrastructure of network (switches, routers, wiring, etc) |

Reports infrastructure problems to Network Services. |
Installs/removes equipment as infrastructure evolves. |

|
|
Network Equipment Inventory |
Maintains computer inventory for all buildings. |
Assists accounting dept with tagging and entering equipment into assett tracking systems. |
Maintains building inventory by room number. |
Maintains inventory on assigned computers. |
Reports need to relocate computers to LMS or network services. |

|
Network Policies & Procedures |
Communicates Network Policies & procedures by providing rules and guidance for building level LMS Staff. |
Writes and updates Acceptable Use Agreements, and Student/Parent permission process. Works with Network Services to provide guidance to LMS for district policies & procedures. |
Communicates network policies & procedures
to staff and students through daily practices. |
Communicates network rules to staff and students (i.e. no games, chat rooms, etc) in daily practice. |
Communicates network policies & procedures
to students through daily practices. |
Reinforces School Board Policies and Procedures relating to technology. |

Software |
Coordinates selection and procurement of desktop productivity and back-end software for all computer systems. |
Manages instructional software Maintains LMT Budget for Library Media & Technology. |
Purchases building network licenses and information resources through Library Media & Tech budget, with input from Technology Committee & teachers. |

Purchases specialized instructional software from department budgets, following district procedures. |
Allocates classroom & department budgets for software and intructional needs. |

Software Inventory |
Works with LMT to evaluate software for technical compatibility and approve for use on network. |
Maintains records of building network software licenses, and individual machines software. |
Assists Library Services in maintaining building software inventory |
Assists with software licensing compliance in bldg. |

Student & Teacher Account |
Creates logon and email accounts. |
Provides guidance for parental permission
forms for Internet & Email. |
Requests new logon accounts and email accounts
as needed. |

|
|
Student & Teacher Account Problems Management |
Deals with student and teacher account permission issues referred by LMS or administrators. |
|
Solves password problems for students throughout year. |
Provides help desk support to teachers and staff |
Refers student password problems to librarian or library instructional assistant. |

Student & Teacher Accounts Deletions |
Moves and/or deletes accounts for students and teachers who transfer to another building |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Student Discipline for Network Account Problems. |
Identifies students with problems: (games, executable files, excessive storage space) and notifies LMS or principal at building. |
|
Disables student accounts or removes Internet/email access. Speaks to student about problem areas and refers to Administrators. |
Identifies students who may be causing computer problems or using computer resources inappropriately to LMS. |
Identifies students disobeying network rules
to LMS as needed. |
Building administrators handle serious infractions of network rules & policies (obscenity, pornography, harassment, threats, etc) |

Instructional Program: |
Provides network support for student instructional programs. Maintains highest degree of availability of student and staff use computers as possible within resource constraints |
Coordinates student technology assessment each year - Mankato Self-assessment and the formal Technology Assessment for grades 4, 7, 11. |
Orients all freshmen to the resources on
the network in the fall. |
Assists students and teachers in labs and library on informal basis. |
Understands instructional uses of the Internet
and plans units or lessons which incorporate
it. |
Oversees the School’s Mission, Objectives & Strategies
that deal with the use of technology to meet
Learner Achievement Targets. |

Instructional Program: Staff Development |
Provides network support for staff development training. |
Provides staff development opportunities throughout year. |
With technology committee, organizes staff
development opportunities in building. |
Assists teachers in informal situations. Conducts formal in-service training on desktop productivity applications. |
Tech coaches train teachers in teacher training sessions. |
Provides SLIG funds for teacher training opportunities. |

School Web Site Creation & |
Creates area for storage & maintenance
of school web sites. |
Provides training for LMS on creating and
maintaining web sites. |
Creates and maintains school web site with
help from interested administrators, teachers
and students. |
