This is not a separate module, but a day set aside prior to beginning the activities of Module 1 for introducing the course and outlining the curriculum, class rules and expectations.
Description: Most teachers have specific introductory activities that they like to (or are required to) incorporate into the first day or two of any class. On day one--or prior to the start of Module 1--for this course, the teacher will want to cover some of the following aspects of the course as they apply to a particular school and lab. It is also helpful to have students complete a short survey of technology skills to help with planning for the first activities.
Here are some discussion points to cover:
a) Ethical elements of computer use in this course
b) Potential job paths (web master, web designer, web developer, etc.)
c) Rules and consequences
d) Grading criteria (sample), as well as incremental checks on capstone projects
e) Syllabus
f) Documentation/recordkeeping/email management which includes electronic portfolio, hard copy file folder, and backup all work on Student and Resource drives. This includes an explanation of biweekly report forms (sample) that students fill out-- essentially a journal of daily activities done at the end of each class session.
Next the teacher may want to give a short written survey of the students' web design skills and background to help you decide on initial activities and to decide on team orientation for early projects, as well as set the pace and overall goals of the course.
Learner Outcome: At the end of this lesson students will fully understand the scope of the class as well as the basic rules, policies, and expectations.
Activity: You may want to develop a short quiz covering ethics, rules and policies that students must pass and sign in order to use the classroom computers. These can be kept on file to help hold students accountable for responsible behavior in the lab.
Resources Needed:
Survey form (sample) as well as written syllabus and list of pertinent district and classroom rules.
Suggested Assessment:
The quiz outlined above, or a thorough class discussion covering important aspects of computer ethics, class rules and policies.
