Safety and Ethics in a Digital World

Description:
The Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) is a federal law enacted by Congress in December, 2000, to address concerns about student access to offensive content over the Internet and inappropriate use of school computers. Schools are required to adopt and enforce a policy to monitor online activities of students and educational staff will, to the best of their ability, monitor student use of the Internet and email in school.

Learn the issues and legal implications of Internet safety.  This course will highlight the following topics:

• Cyber Citizenship
• Personal Internet Safety
• Cyber Bullying
• Predator Identification
• Intellectual Property and Copyright
• Acceptable Use Policy

This two-session course will provide essential information for implementing a safe, responsible digital environment for personal and classroom connections.  Participants will build upon the following powerful teaching and learning strategies:

• Teachers continuously assess and monitor student learning.  
• Teachers utilize a continuum of support leading to responsible, independent learners.

Objectives:
Participants will be able to:

• Demonstrate legal and ethical behaviors when using information and technology
• Understand the relationship between internet use and district network resources
• Understand the legal obligations schools have for students using the Internet
• Understand personal Internet safety guidelines
• Know the Bellingham School District Acceptable Use Policy

• Staff
• Evaluate acceptable student use of technology
• Discuss consequences of misuse
