Description:

The Internet is a vast publishing medium where literally anyone can publish anything.  Knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of various search engines, search techniques, and evaluation strategies will increase productivity in locating valid resources to support teaching.  This two-session course will provide the foundational understanding and skills to use Instructional Web Resources for personal and classroom work. Participants will build upon the following powerful teaching and learning strategies:

• Teachers provide a classroom environment that actively engages all students in learning

• Teachers differentiate by using a variety of instructional strategies based on the assessed strengths, needs and interests of their students

• Teachers implement whole group, small group and individual instruction that provide for independent application and practice

• Teachers utilize a continuum of support leading to responsible, independent learners

• Teachers identify and articulate clear learning objectives based on grade-level expectations and assessment of students’ needs

Objectives:
Participants will be able to:

• Use basic search engines and explain search results
• Evaluate the validity of web sites
• Refine searches to obtain more specific information
  • Use advanced search features
• Choose the best search engine for a specific information seeking task
• Use the main functions of Internet browsers:
  • Back, forward, reload, home, favorites, history
  • Manage and organize favorites
• Use and distribute information from the Internet within the guidelines of copyright law
• Move between Web pages using addresses and links
• Save and edit text and images from Web pages and use citations
• Identify databases available in your school and name the main uses for each
• Use Destiny for text, web, and standards searching
• Locate information by key word, title, author and subject in library database
• Describe search strategies and use them to solve common information problems
