ASSESSMENT:
Save in your H: drive—Your teacher may ask you to run the slide show OR demonstrate your knowledge of PowerPoint features

PROCEDURE:

Open Bellingham.ppt in S: TechConn/ Presentation*. Save a copy to your H: drive, adding your name in the file name, and open it. You will learn about PowerPoint as you make changes and add functions to this presentation.

 

  1. Explore Views in PowerPoint

PowerPoint Views

  • Briefly hold mouse pointer over icon to see the name of each view
  • Click each of the view icons to see different ways to work with the presentation:
    • Normal View – the work zone
    • Outline View – change the text that appears on slides
    • Slide View – work on a close-up of one slide. Select by clicking on the numbered slide icons on the left
    • Slide Sorter View – thumbnails of all slides: drag and drop slides to change sequence
    • Slide Show – use arrow keys, mouse clicks, or Enter to run the show, Escape to end

 

  1. Apply a different Design Template
  • Select one of the slides numbered 2-7
  • Go to Format> Apply Design Template
    • OR right click in the slide (not text box) for popup menu
    • OR click the Common Tasks button at the right end of the formatting toolbar
  • Select a design name and see it in the display window. PowerPoint offers over 40 designs!
  • Choose a design that suits the Bellingham subject matter and click Apply

PowerPoint DesignTemplates

  • PowerPoint changes every slide in the presentation to the design you choose
  • Note the different color scheme of Slide 1 (applied to this slide only, for contrast & variety)

  • Open the Slide Color Scheme window (Format menu OR right click)

  • Take time here to experiment. Depending on the chosen Design Template, there are from 3 to as many as 8 different schemes using various sets of colors. Suggestion: to see the designs with the most schemes, try Citrus, Global, Soaring, or Sumi Painting
  • The PowerPoint default—Apply to All—gives one scheme to all slides. If you click Apply, the selected color scheme is applied only to the selected slide
  • Task for this section:
    • Choose and apply a new Color Scheme for Bellingham.ppt
    • AND select a contrasting color scheme for one or two of the slides
      • Choose related scheme colors—e.g., light and dark backgrounds of same colors
    • SAVE your results
  1. Explore and change each slide in the presentation. Replace content if you wish, but keep 8 slides with similar features.

Notes:

  • Changing the Design Template affects slide layout. Fix problems as you work on each slide: move, resize, etc., to balance layout.
  • Features in slides may overlap. A right mouse click brings up a menu for the area you point to. If the menu you need doesn't pop up, move your mouse and click in another area.

1 - Title Slide

Format> Font

Insert> Picture> AutoShapes, OR View> Toolbars: check Drawing

Slide Show> Custom Animation

Title - add italics, shadow

Banner – try a different AutoShape & add animation

2 - Transportation List

Format> Bullets

Drawing toolbar> Rectangle, Line Style, Shadow, & 3-D

  • Draw> Order (Click Draw for popup menu)

Bullets – try another style

Draw a border around the list and change border appearance

If bulleted text is covered by shading layer, click Draw> Order> Send to back

3 - Getting to Work Chart

Right click in chart area:

Chart Object> Open> Right click again for options:

  • Chart Type
  • Chart Options> Data Labels

Show data in a Pie Chart and show data label and percent

Add animations – Introduce by Category

 

4 - Arts & Entertainment

Insert> Hyperlink

Insert> Picture> From File

View> Header and Footer: check Footer box, and paste the permission statement into the text box.  Be sure to click Apply (to this slide only)

Find & insert museum photo from presentation folder*WhatcomMuseum.jpg

Paste the permission into the footer of this slide. (Open Copyright.doc in the presentation folder*. Find and Copy the museum permission statement)

5 - Temperature

Table

View> Toolbars: check Tables and Borders to use the toolbar

Work with:

> Fill color

> Border Style, Width

OR select table, right click, and choose Borders and Fill...: click on diagram to apply borders

Insert > Picture> AutoShape (or use Drawing toolbar)

Add shading to rows for contrast of high & low temperatures. Work with the warm ( red, yellow, orange) and cool (blue, green) colors in your color scheme

Change borders —color, width, and/or style

Hint: diagonal lines (////) around the table show that a cell, row or column is selected. 

To select the whole table, click on the border again so that it is surrounded by dots (....)

Add an arrow pointing to one data item

6 - Events

Insert > Picture> From File

Slide Show> Custom Animation

Choose Slide Show view to see the animation effect

View> Header and Footer: check Footer box, and paste the permission statement into the text box.  Be sure to click Apply (to this slide only)

Find & insert event logos (presentation folder*):

Drag & resize images to fit below names

Add a different animation for each logo

Paste the permission into the footer of this slide. (Open Copyright.doc in the presentation folder*. Find and Copy the logo permission statement)

7 - Recreation

Insert > Picture> Clip Art

Slide Show> Custom Animation

Replace with list of your choice

Replace with Clip Art of your choice

Use animation to sequence how words and images appear

8 - Final impression

Slide Layout – Large Object – make it fill the slide by pulling corners.

Note: Bellingham Bay photo used with artist permission. It could not be cropped to fit slide proportions, so background fill was used

Draw - Order - Choose Send to Back if one image covers another

Replace with photo and message of your choice

Change Word Art style and make sure it is visible against background

 

  1. Final step: work with the Slide Show menu. Add these features:
  • Slide Transitions

Power Point Slide Transitions

There are many ways to add Slide Transitions. The Slide Sorter View is one way. This graphic shows dropdown selection boxes for Slide Transition Effects and Animation Effects. Slide 2 is selected, and currently the boxes show No Transition and No Effect.  Click the dropdown arrows for options.

 

  • Action Buttons

PowerPoint Action Buttons

Select a slide, then choose Slide Show> Action Buttons

After you Select a button, a plus sign + appears—place it where you want the button, click to add it, and pull its handles to the size you want. The Action Settings menu will appear with navigation choices for your button.

 

  • Timings

Choose Slide Show> Rehearse Timings AND > Set Up Show. The dialog boxes offer choices.
