CHALLENGE:  As a member of a particular club or co-curricular activity at school, you are in charge of the publicity. You must design and produce a FLYER that will serve as the announcement for the first meeting of the year.
TASK: Create an impacting flyer that attracts interested students and provides them information about the first meeting PRODUCT:  Includes Design elements of a quality flyer & Content or Information needed to advertise the event: date, time, location, attendance benefits
RESOURCES:
Print
resources: flyers from other clubs/activities
Personnel: graphic designers
ASSESSMENT:
Flyer Assessment Rubric
Self, peer and teacher evaluation
REAL Assessment – does your flyer actually get USED
PROCEDURES:
  1. Compare & contrast existing flyers – critique these flyers based on these elements:
  • Image included--clear and consistent with the activity being promoted
  • Space used effectively--white space enhances delivery of message & clutter is avoided
  • Formatting--Borders, Word Art, Shading, etc.--enhances flyer and its message
  • Alignment of design elements allows for effective eye movement
  1. Research the activities available in your school by interviewing the Activity Director, club advisors, coaches, and club or team members. Choose a club or activity to advertise in your flyer.
  2. Outline and lay out a draft flyer using paper & pencil - Have 2 classmates evaluate your draft flyer using the Flyer Assessment Rubric.
  3. Refine ideas on draft flyer. Use Publisher to create a flyer that reflects the feedback from classmates as well as your outline flyer.
  4. Open Publisher. Click on Page Wizard / Flyer.
  • At the Design Wizard box, click on Community. When it asks you ‘What style flyer do you want?’ click on School Clubs. Click on the Create It! bar.
  • In the title section, type the name of the club or activity you want to promote, & click Next.
  • Type the name of your organization, which would be your high school, & click Next.
  • NOTE: The Wizard asks if you want step-by-step directions. If you are an inexperienced Publisher user, you may want to say Yes, but if you click No, you can access the Help function at any time by clicking the green arrow at the bottom right of the Publisher screen.
  1. DESIGN ELEMENTS: Zoom in to 66% to enlarge the image.
  • Double click on the title portion of the flyer. This allows you to go to Word Art to alter the font and text style of the title. Go to the top tool bar and experiment with text style, font, shading, spacing, etc., using the top tool bar functions.
  • Remember to keep in mind that the flyer needs to be easily read as well as eye-catching. Flyers that are too busy are distracting rather than eye-catching!
  • Apply this same Word Art function to the organization name.
  • Continue modifying the Design Elements. Click in the border and go to Format, then to Border and Border Art. Choose a border that you think is appropriate for the club you are promoting. Highlight it and click OK. Your new border will replace the wizard border.
  • To replace the picture, click in the picture. If you have the right click function on your mouse, right click and go to Insert Clip Art. If you don’t have the right click function, go to Insert/Clip Art. Choose a picture from the Clip Art choices by highlighting & click Insert.
  • NOTE: If you have a scanned or digital image in your electronic files that is appropriate for the club/activity, you can insert your original image here instead of using Clip Art.
  1. INFORMATION/CONTENT: Now you need to prepare the information details--time, date, place, etc. Click on the boxes with the small print and type in your specific information. HINT: right click on the highlighted section to bring up a list of the many text formatting options available (or look through the Edit, View, Insert and Format menus on the menu bar to explore possibilities).
  2. Once you feel you have all the information needed and the formatting options completed, reduce the image to 25% so that you can view the overall layout. Remember that to mass-produce this flyer in color is very expensive, so you will need to be sure that your images will copy in black and white. If there is a shaded background behind any of your lettering, be sure it is very light.
  3. FINAL STEP: results in a finished brochure ready for print, evaluation by peers and teacher as well as use by the club or activity you’ve chosen to promote.
