Computer Basics
Goal: Demonstrate knowledge of concepts underlying hardware, software, and connectivity.

PROCEDURES
- Read and discuss vocabulary.
- Fill in the squares of a BINGO sheet choosing 24 random words from definitions.
- BINGO: The teacher pulls definitions from a bag, and reads aloud only the definitions. Students determine which word corresponds to the definition and mark that word on BINGO sheet. Students might work on their own or with a partner to figure out the corresponding word from their vocabulary sheet. Students play several rounds, making sure to include all of the terms.
- Using an old computer which has been dismantled: observe, discuss, and handle (when applicable) computer hardware.
- Take apart a floppy disk and discuss its parts and the proper way to care for disks.
- After becoming familiar with vocabulary, watch video: "The Journey Inside: The Computer." Watch any one of 8 segments, which run 9-10 each, or see all 8 segments for a total running time of 72 minutes.
- Read about ergonomic and waste issues associated with computers in these articles: "Ergonomics for Computer Workstations," and "E-Waste." Complete the ergonomics handout.
