Due to the multibillion dollar state budget deficit, the Bellingham School District will receive less state funding for the 2009-2010 school year. As a result, the district engaged the community and staff in a budget savings process to reduce operating expenses.
The Adopted Budget Savings Plan results in no summer school for students in grades K-8. This was previously funded with I-728 state support. Instead of summer school for remediation, schools are working to support students not yet at standard through a variety of interventions that data shows is more effective than the former five week summer school program.
A limited summer school program for high school students at one of the district's high schools will include some credit-ahead and credit-retrieval course offerings, which will be funded through tuition. In addition, a state-funded Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) preparation course will be offered to prepare high school students for the August WASL retake exam. Transportation will be available through partnership with Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA). More information and a high school summer school application will be posted on this Web site.
