Gathering Information
Which City is the Best?
You know that more families are moving today than in the past due to the economy and many other reasons. Imagine that your family has decided to move from the West Coast to the New England area to improve their life.
We will simulate a segment of this activity by asking you to focus just on one criterion (parks and recreation) and one source of informtion.
Your family has given you the maps of three cities and have asked you to help them select the best city to move to.
How good are the parks and recreation resources? The cities are: Providence, Boston, and Hartford.
Your job in the next module will be to create a letter which you will share with your parents, recommending the best city to move to. Your job now is to take notes based upon map information only comparing and contrasting the three cities with regard to parks and recreation.
1) Open a word processing document and list the three cities, to record your findings.
Links to the Cities: What can a map tell you about a city?
Turn your Autoloading Images back on from the OPTIONs menu. Then go to Map Quest You may want to use your STOP button after 20 seconds if it seems slow. This will often give you all you need.
Type one city and its state into the search box and submit the search until your city appears.
Zoom in on Boston once or twice by clicking on it.
Unselect "personal" and select "recreation" from the menu at the bottom of the page. Just below that area, select "Update Map" so the recreational resources will appear. You may then select "Identify Icon" and click on any one icon to see what it is.
2) List your findings in your learning journal. How good are the resources in each city?
