Module 10
Investigating Curriculum Resources

Introduction:

The Bellingham Public Schools Home Page has many relevant curriculum resources which are very easy to use.

Exploration:

When you're reading a good book and you want to save your place, you make a bookmark. You do the same thing when you find a good site on the Internet. During this lesson you'll looking at sites teachers have selected for you.

The first step is to create your own bookmark file (called Favorites) in Internet Explorer..

  • Click on Favorites from the menu bar.
  • Click on Organize Favorites.
  • Click on the icon to create a new folder (a folder with a star to the right side)
  • Type in your name's Bookmarks (i.e. Anne's Bookmarks).
  • Click on close. The next time you click on Favorites, you should see your bookmark folder in the drop down menu.

With a partner, go to the Bellingham School District Teacher Center, and click on CURRICULUM PAGES. With your partner spend 15 minutes exploring sites which are relevant to your grade.

Find three sites that might be useful to bookmark in your Bookmark folder. Here's how:

  • Click on Favorites.
  • Click on Add to Favorites.
  • Click on the button "Create In>>"
  • Select your bookmark folder and click OK.

While you are searching please keep in mind the following questions:

  • Which sites are most useful?

  • Why are curriculum pages a good place to start?

  • Why are annotations more valuable than just a list of sites?

To get back to this page use the File Menu and find Investigating Curriculum Resources

Discussion:

Spend the next 5-10 minutes, with your partner, answering the three questions listed above and discussing the sites which you might use in your classroom.

Now it's time to save your bookmarks (Favorites) to your H: drive so you'll be able to find and use them next time.

Here's how to save your bookmarks:

  • Click on Favorites.
  • Click on Organize Favorites.
  • Right click on your bookmark folder, and select "copy".
  • Click on the arrow to the right of the favorites dialog box.
  • Find your directory in the "H" drive.
  • Right click on the mouse and select "paste".
  • Your bookmarks will copy to your H: drive for your use next time.
