Questioning
What do you need to know to solve the problem or make the decision?
The class will brainstorm factors that make a place livable. As a team, group these factors into 4 categories of similar items and give each category a descriptive label.
Develop several 3 answerable questions for each category, that will yield facts your team can use to compare countries. Let your curiosity flow!
These answerable questions should:
- Call for numbers or data
- Be precisely written, eg. "What is the average temperature for the month of August?"
- Concern things you want to know about the country
- Relate to important information about living in the country. Some facts are interesting to know, but don't relate to daily life in the country.
- Avoid "Yes" or "No" answers
- Avoid questions that use words such as "good" or "fun."
Use the graphic organizer, Inspiration, to make a mind map of your answerable questions. The Mind Map must show:
- The big question: What makes a good place to live?
- The 4 category labels and numbers (1-4).
- Your answerable questions for each category including Mind Map location (1a, 1b, 1c, etc.)
- The resource you expect will give you the needed information for each question (atlas, textbook, website)
Note: The use of different colors and shapes helps to clarify information on your Mind Map. Look at a sample mind map.
