What Makes a Good Place to Live?

What are the interrelationships among political systems, cultures, environments, and economies?

Questioning
What do you need to know to solve the problem or make the decision?

The class will brainstorm factors that make a place livable. As a team, group these factors into 4 categories of similar items and give each category a descriptive label.

Develop several 3 answerable questions for each category, that will yield facts your team can use to compare countries. Let your curiosity flow!

These answerable questions should:

  • Call for numbers or data
  • Be precisely written, eg. "What is the average temperature for the month of August?"
  • Concern things you want to know about the country
  • Relate to important information about living in the country. Some facts are interesting to know, but don't relate to daily life in the country.
  • Avoid "Yes" or "No" answers
  • Avoid questions that use words such as "good" or "fun."

Use the graphic organizer, Inspiration, to make a mind map of your answerable questions. The Mind Map must show:

  • The big question: What makes a good place to live?
  • The 4 category labels and numbers (1-4).
  • Your answerable questions for each category including Mind Map location (1a, 1b, 1c, etc.)
  • The resource you expect will give you the needed information for each question (atlas, textbook, website)

Note: The use of different colors and shapes helps to clarify information on your Mind Map. Look at a sample mind map.
