The World Inside You

What are the components and steps necessary for human body processes to function properly?

Teacher Tips for this Project

  • This research module will take approximately 2-3 weeks.  Plan on spending at least 4 days total in the computer lab gathering, sifting and sorting information.
  • This is an group project (up to 4 per team).
  • The "Senses" can be covered by special needs students or absentees individually.
  • Decide where you want students to save their working files and clarify the directions you wish to communicate to them.
  • Change due dates or adjust timeline. Progress checks on the outline and chart should be scheduled. See sample timeline.
  • Use Note Sheets in each outline to guide students information gathering and split up the "jobs". Students must cover the whole notes sheet as a team, and submit it to the teachers with their names next to each section they individually covered (example: liver - Joseph)
  • You can do a lifesized 3-D object, PowerPoint presentation, poster and a moving model of part of the system.
  • It is highly recommended that you have a cart of books and/or encyclopedias, which support the research. Also Posters from the health and Drug Education series (Bruce Algra) are useful, as well as A.D.A.M. cd-rom.
  • This project works particularly well in a Core class where Social Studies and Language Arts can be integrated.
  • Preview the references on the Gathering page so that you can guide students to the most helpful section of these sites.  Watch for advertising and any sites that require a visitor to login or register.  Test out the site requirements before using them with your students.
  • Options for sharing information - Gather students in small groups to share their decisions.  3-4 students look at the notes sheet and discuss their information and decisions on what to share with their audience in the oral presentation.
  • Encourage students to use their own words on the Notes Sheet - they should use the medical dictionary to translate the medical term into a more easily understood term.
  • You may use the tools found in Citing Sources for Writing & Research to assist your students in compiling their bibliography.
  • Modify to fit your curriculum requirements.
