Time Traveler: Ancient Americas

How did early civilizations develop and influence modern culture?

Bellingham Schools Research Investigation

5th Grade

Planning
Develop your information-seeking strategies.

This experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity! You will be traveling to places no modern man has gone. Before you depart, you must investigate all four ancient cultures and then present your travel decision to Captain Kirk and his crew. They will want to know the reasons why you chose that civilization, and why you didn't choose the others.

Planning Your Research

Brainstorm a list of at least six categories you may want to research before you make a choice.

Four of your categories must be Geography, Food, Shelter, and Religious Customs.

From your list choose two more categories for a total of six.

Show your list of research categories to your teacher for approval before going on.

Next brainstorm a list of questions for each of your 6 categories.  You should have 3 focus questions related to each category.  For instance:

Geography-

·        What type of climate existed?

·        What was the terrain?

·        Were any large bodies of water nearby?

Create your own questions for each category.

Create a Web using Inspiration or paper.  List your 6 categories and the focus questions.  This web will be your map guiding you to important information.

Show your completed web to your teacher before going on.
