Vacation Washington

How do geography and resources affect the choices people make in Washington State?

Teacher Tips for this Project

This variation on the Road Trip Through Washington should take less time to complete because:

  • It narrows the focus of each team's research.
  • The final product is a Publisher poster rather than a brochure.

Each team of 2 students will research only one of the activities (fishing, festivals, mountain climbing, rafting). The teacher should assign teams to activities so that all activities are equally covered.

Each team is responsible for gathering information on all of the locations for its activity. This ensures that students do research for all or most regions of Washington. Each team then uses the information to make a recommendation to the rest of the class through a persuasive poster indicating the best place for the activity.

All posters will be displayed and the students, individually plan their own family vacation, which includes stops around the state to enjoy all four vacation activities. This should be based on the information they see and read on the posters. Finally the students use a copy of a Washington State map to plot the trip they wishes to make from beginning to end.

The Teacher should be prepared to continue to focus on comparisons between the different regions of Washington following use of this module. If a more thorough research project would be preferred, use Road Trip Through Washington instead.

If you choose to use this variation, you will need to use the following Note Sheets for each activity and the Decision Sheet. There is also a Publisher template for an 8 ½" x14" poster.
