Types of Volcanoes:

There are at least 26 different types of volcanoes. The three most common types of volcanoes are:

  • Shield Volcanoes form when liquid lava spills and spreads. Over a long time, the lava builds a low dome shaped mountain. This kind of volcano will erupt red hot lava. Mauna Loa is a shield volcano.
    • Visit Mauna Loa, the largest volcano in the world. Be sure to click on Eruption History to learn about its most recent eruptions.
  • Cinder-cone Volcanoes form rock pieces (tephra) erupt and fall back around the vent. This builds a cone shaped mountain. Paricutin, in Mexico, is a cinder cone volcano
    • Visit Paricutin, and read the story of how the newest volcano in the Western Hemisphere was formed, and what happened when it erupted.
  • Strato or composite volcanoes are formed when both lava and rocks erupt from a central vent. Mt. St. Helens is a composite volcano. Visit Mount St. Helens and learn what happened during the 1980 eruption.
