Road Trip Through Washington

How can we plan ahead to protect life and property if Mt. Baker erupts?

Bellingham Schools Research Investigation

4th Grade

Steps for this Project

You will follow the research process as you work through this Research Module. The steps you will follow are:

Questioning
Ask yourself this guiding question: "How can we plan ahead to protect life and property if Mt. Baker erupts?" In order to answer that question, you will focus in on smaller questions to guide your planning and your research.

Planning
Decide on what jobs your team will need to do in order to get the information to answer your questions. What will each team member do to make the team successful? How will you collect your information? What resources will you use?

Gathering
You will visit various web sites to gather information about volcanic hazards. You may also use books, magazines, videos, and other resources.

Sorting and Sifting
Now it is time to arrange and rearrange the information to focus on what is important to your project. You will decide which volcanic hazard to focus on.

Synthesizing
What decisions can you make, using the information you gathered?  Brainstorm some ideas for your Mt. Baker Safety Plan that will address the hazard you selected.

Gather, Sort, Sift, Synthesize
Repeat these steps until you have all the information you need.

Evaluating
Do you have enough information about your hazard? Does your Safety Plan really address the hazard? What steps will you take to put it into action?

Reporting
You will develop your Safety Plan and report it to the Bellingham City Planners. Your teacher will let you know what kind of presentation is required.
