Uncle Cyrus Needs A Job

How did natural resources affect choices people made in our local community?

Bellingham Schools Research Investigation

Questioning
What do you need to know to solve the problem or make the decision?

After you send the letter to Uncle Cyrus, you look in a local newspaper, The Daily Reveille, for job openings. You see that four businesses are advertising for workers. You decide to visit each of the four businesses, to learn about the jobs that are available.

Before you go visit the businesses, you think of some questions that you want to ask when you get there. Below are some of your questions.  Your team will choose 3 of them to investigate.

1.    Where is this job located? (In what part of Whatcom County will Uncle Cyrus work?)

2.    What does this job pay? (Will it pay enough for Uncle Cyrus to support his family?)

3.    What are the problems with this job? (Will Uncle Cyrus be in any danger?)

4.    What are the natural resources needed for this job? (Are there plenty of resources to last a long time, or will they run out?)

5.    What kinds of tools and equipment are needed to do this job? (Will Uncle Cyrus need to purchase his own tools and equipment?)

6.    What kind of lifestyle will Uncle Cyrus have if he takes this job? (Where will he live, what will he eat, how hard will he work, etc.?)

7.    What kinds of skills or knowledge are needed to do this job? (Will Uncle Cyrus need to be trained first?)

8.    What is the history of this business? (Has this business been successful in the past?)

Record your three questions now, on your Note Sheet.
