A
fish trap watchman did not need to supply any tools or equipment of his own. P.A.F. and other large fish packing companies
supplied all of the boats and the gear that was needed by the fishermen. Some
fish trap watchmen bought themselves a gun for self defense and to scare away
the fish pirates.
If
a man had enough money, he could buy his own fishing boat and gear.
Most fishing boats were powered by rowing with oars, but
some boats had sails and the big “tenders” (trap steamers) were powered by
steam.
Fishermen caught salmon in three ways: fish traps, gillnets, and purse-seine nets.
