The coalminer had to know how to carefully place the dynamite in the right location so that it would blast in the right direction. He had to know exactly how many sticks of dynamite were needed so that the dynamite would not make too big or too little an explosion. The blast needed to be big enough to expose the vein of coal, but not so big that it would cause the tunnel to collapse.
