Washington state law regarding special education paraeducator competencies requires documentation of the knowledge and skills essential for paraeducators who work with students with disabilities.

The links on this page are to forms and information regarding meeting the paraeducator competencies requirements in the Bellingham School District.

Competencies 1-11 may be met in the following ways:

  • Classes sponsored by Bellingham School District (including those taught by instructors from ESD 189)
  • Classes available online through Bates Technical College
  • Certificate of completion of the competency through Bellingham Technical College or Whatcom Community College
  • Observation or interview and check off/verification by supervising special education teacher.

A separate checklist is required for Competencies 12-14.
