H.S. Graduation Requirements Task Force
December 12, 2006
Minutes
In attendance: Sherrie Brown, Maria Griggs, Bobbie Jaffe, Zoe Kapan, Julie Kratzig, Gigi Morganti, Michelle Ouilette, Todd Smith, Jennie Styer, Phyllis Textor, Alan Doud, Ralph Hayden.
I. The meeting began with introductions of new members. The minutes from the last meeting were read and approved.
II. Information that was requested at the previous meeting was shared:
- Sherrie shared information about specific math requirements from other districts in the state.
- Sherrie passed out a memo that Brian Rick had prepared for Susan Zoller in August of 2006 that included data about how many BSD students had taken two years of foreign language, three years of math and four years of English. The memo also included information about how many students had taken four years of math. Maria Griggs made the observation that the students included in the data were all high school graduates. The group felt it would be a good idea to see how many dropouts should also have been included in the data. Sherrie will bring that data to the next meeting. She will also bring data to the next meeting regarding the number of students who have taken two or more science classes.
- Sherrie shared the new social studies requirements from OSPI.
- Gigi shared information about occupations and vocational classes. She explained how classes were designated as meeting the occupational credit requirements. She explained how certain classes receive vocational funding.
Julie provided the group with lists of classes students can take at each high school that fulfill the occupational requirements.
III. The group discussed the “homework” assignment which was to read the research review prepared by Duane Baker and company entitled “The Essence of College Readiness: Implications for Students, Parents, Schools, and Researchers.” Members of the task force met in small groups to answer three questions that were provided to guide their thinking. A discussion of the topic followed.
IV. The group ran short of time so they agreed to compare current BSD graduation requirements with current Washington state college and university entrance requirements to identify the gaps before the next meeting. In addition, it was agreed that the following information would be gathered:
- Sherrie will find out how Mabton can provide 1.5 credits for a year of math.
- Sherrie will find out whether or not Math 300 students were included in the AP/Honors data in Brian’s memo to Susan.
- Sherrie will find out the senior dropout rate for 2005-2006.
Sherrie will contact the HEC Board to see if they are going to change the college/university math requirement to Algebra 2.
- Sherrie will find out what the entrance requirements for tech school are so the task force can compare them with college and university requirements.
V. The task force agreed that they would focus on English at the next meeting. Data needed for this conversation are:
- What are students taking instead of English their senior year?
- How many seniors have a reduced schedule?
- What is the current failure rate in English classes?
