Minutes

In attendance: Sherrie Brown, Steve Clarke, Bobbie Jaffe, Julie Kratzig, Gigi Morganti, Michelle Ouilette, Todd Smith, Jennie Styer, Phyllis Textor, Alan Doud, Ralph Hayden, Maria Griggs, Lynn Torpey.

I.   Ann Reed, Director of Instructional Technology and Libraries, explained the new “tier” technology literacy indicators for 8th grade. The requirements are from the No Child Left Behind Act. A discussion followed about the impact of these new requirements on our tentative recommendation to move Tech Connections out of the high school and into the elementary and middle schools. Ann shared that the skill requirements for the new tiers generally went beyond the skill requirements of Tech Connection.

II.   Information was shared with the group:

III.   A discussion of mathematics followed. The group was given copies of the district “Mathematics Course Sequence Grades 6-12.” Maria Griggs said that the sequence had been modified and Foundations for Algebra had been changed to Algebra I–A and Algebra I–B. Algebra I–A and I–B cover the same material as the regular Algebra course, but the pace has been slowed to two years.

After a lengthy discussion, the group tentatively agreed that students should be required to take three years of math, but a decision was not reached about what math courses would fulfill the graduation credit requirements. The discussion will be continued at the next meeting.

IV. Next Steps:

V. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 6 at 3:00 p.m. in Room 112 at Roeder.
