The purpose of the ELL Program Transition Committee is to develop a recommendation to the Superintendent outlining the steps our district should take in aligning the District’s ELL Program with Federal law, State regulations and District goals and initiatives

Type: Ad hoc

Purpose(s):

  • Develop steps to align the ELL Program with Federal law, State regulations, and District goals and initiatives
  • Recommend an ELL Program Transition Plan to the Superintendent

Basis for Establishment:

  • Washington State ELL Program regulations  (to be met by 2006-2007)
  • Current research in second language learning

Decision Making:

  • Consultative by recommendation to the Superintendent from the Director of Federal and Special Programs
  • Consultative to the Director of Federal and Special Programs by committee members using the processes of consensus and input/feedback

Plan:

  • Review the current ELL Program structure and the program structure required by the State of Washington
  • Develop steps and a timeline for transitioning from the current structure to the new program structure
  • Outline activities that will support the achievement of each step of the transition plan

Qualifications:

  • Members who successfully completed and implemented current research based strategies for working with ELL students in the classroom
  • Parent members from ELL funded program(s)

Members:

  • The Committee will consist of a minimum of 10 members:
  • 1 ELL Program Facilitator, Marie Little
  • 3 Classroom teachers
  • 2 School administrators
  • 1 Professional Development person
  • 2 ELL Classified staff member
  • Chairperson: Federal and Special Programs Director, Susan Peterson

Responsibilities:

  • Regular meeting attendance
  • Learn about and apply Federal and State regulations that guide the ELL Program
  • Learn about and support new program regulations
  • Communicate the content of the meetings and gather input from building staff and parents as requested by the committee
  • Commitment to be a member for one year

 

Timeline:

  • Meet during the school year to draft a recommendation for an ELL Program Transition Plan
  • Dates: Nov. 16, 8:30-3:30 Board Room
  • Dec. 7, Dec. 17, Jan. 19, Feb. 18, Rm. 212, 8:30-11:30 AM
  • March 1, Board Room, 8:30-11:30 AM

 

Budget Implications:

  • ELL Program support for parents and staff to meet –release time, interpreters, childcare, etc.
  • ELL Program support for other needs identified by the Director and approved by the Deputy Superintendent
  • Future professional development needs
  • Other: unknown
