About This Manual

It is the intent of the Bellingham School District to encourage the use of Service Learning as a teaching methodology in all district schools. The Bellingham School District believes Service Learning is an effective method that all educators can use to assist students to become knowledgeable individuals, quality producers, effective communicators, competent thinkers, effective collaborators, responsible citizens, and life-long learners while fulfilling real community needs through curriculum-related service. The purpose of this manual is to assist teachers and administrators with implementation of Service Learning.

Using Service Learning in the Classroom serves as an introduction to the idea of Service Learning to those who are not familiar with the methodology. It is also intended to aid long-time practitioners who would like to see Service Learning transformed from individual projects to school-wide and district-wide integration. The manual establishes background information on Service Learning and defines the roles of principals, teachers, support staff, and outside consultants. It provides ideas for curriculum implementation and classroom integration. Descriptions of current Service Learning resources complete the manual.

Using Service Learning in the Classroom was designed by Bellingham School District's Department of Student Services. If you have any additions or comments, please contact the K-12 Service Learning Facilitator at (360) 676-2787.
