Building
Roles & Responsibilities
Before
using Service Learning in the classroom, it is essential that administrators,
teachers, and all other building staff are aware of Service Learning plans
and have established clearly defined roles.
This
step becomes a key element to Service Learning success especially when
a classroom defines and addresses a real community need within the actual
school walls. Everyone can be affected by classroom activities, from the
school attendance secreateries to the custodial staff.
The
roles and responsibilities described below were developed by a team of
teachers and adminustrators. They provide guidance for principals, teachers,
district support staff, and outside counsultants.

of the Principal
The
principal of the school should:
1.
Monitor and support curricular integraion and assessment; especially in
regards to the alignment with content curriculum.
2.
Support staff, students, and programs with planning time, funding, and
moral support and demonsrate interest, encouragement, and celebration
of projects.
3.
Act as a liaison with the district to monitor compliance of policies,
procedures, and legalities.
4.
Support and be aware of Service-Learning in the building.
5.
Act as a link to parents, community, and resource providers; articulate
Service-Learning to the community.
Role
of the Teacher
When
using Service-Learning as a teaching method, a teacher should:
1.
Plan and implement projects with students.
2.
Provide a safe learning environment, adequate resources, and act as a
facilitator of procedures and organization.
3.
Collaborate and communicate with other teachers, administrators, parents,
and community resources.
4.
Perform reflection and assessment of self, student, and service, especially
in connection to curriculum ad the Essential Student Learnings.
5.
Empower, motivate, and support students and their efforts.
Role
of the Support Staff
Bellingham
School District Service Learning Support Staff shoud:
1.
Help teachers and district Curriculum Director integrate Service Learning
into the curriculum.
2.
Facilitate communication between the district, individual schools, volunteers,
the community, and consultants.
3.
Serve as a clearinghouse of ideas, guidelines, parameters, procedures,
policy, and resource information pertaining to Service Learning.
4.
Articulate Service Learning programs to schools, parents, community members,
district personnel, and School Board.
5.
Support staff, students, and programs with planning time, moral support
and demonstrate interest, encouragement, and celebration of projects.
6.
Train, encourage, assist, ad support all interested Service Learning educators.
Role
of the Outside Consultants
A
Service Learning Consultant should:
1.Possess
expertise in one or more areas of Service Learning.
2.
Assist with teacher training in area of expertise.
3.
Disseminate resource materials, grant information, and provide examples
of Service Learning projects and programs.
4.
Be knowledgeable of district policies, procedures, and the Essential Student
Learnings.
5.
Help problem solve and provide feedback pertaining to Service Larning
projects.
6.
Communicate with district personnel, teachers, and building administrators.
7.
Encourage, facilitate, support, and motivate Service Learning projects.
