Retail business with Canadian neighbors is a very large part of Bellingham's economy. The border is some 25 miles away, allowing Canadians to cross in large numbers eager to take advantage of good prices and tax breaks. Shopping is excellent in Bellingham and there are dozens of motels to house the tired shoppers before they return home.
