The structure of a school calendar is based on the following parameters within which the committee must work to develop the full calendar options:
- Provide optimal learning time for students to ensure there are long enough stretches of days/weeks for continuous learning.
- Without a waiver from the State Board of Education, the school year must have 180 days of school for students.
- By contract, the school schedule consists of two 90-day semesters and snow day make-ups are added to the end of the school year.
- At this time, the committee is assuming there will be two (2) Learning Improvement Days in the calendar – one (1) before school and one (1) on a day designated as a non-student day during the school year.
- There will be a non-student teacher work day at the semester break. This is used for preparing end-of-semester grades.
- Specific dates for WASL testing impact scheduling of Spring break.
