The
Bellingham School Board approved the 2008 summer school program, offering classes Mondays through
Thursdays for students in grades 1-12, beginning July 7 through August 7.
Specialized summer school programs are offered for
students going into sixth and ninth grades who are not
yet meeting state standards in reading, writing or math.
According
to the District's Progress and Promotion policy, current
fifth and eighth graders need to demonstrate that they
can meet the state grade level standards as measured
by state or District assessments. Eighth graders also
need to demonstrate proficiency by earning passing grades
in core subjects in two out of the three trimesters,
one of which must be spring trimester.
Summer
school is strongly recommended for fifth and eighth
graders who are not yet meeting standards by June and
they will receive this intervention at no charge. Students
whose families choose to waive this
opportunity will receive additional support at the next
grade level for at least a portion of the day. Summer school offerings in reading and math will continue
for students in grades 1-4 and 7-8.
An
elective culminating project course is offered for students entering grade 12 who want classroom support to get an early
start on the graduation requirement.
Breakfast
will be served at summer school locations
free of charge to all children ages 2 - 18. The breakfast program runs July 7 - August 7.
