OVERVIEW -- FIRST STEPS

For buildings, the strategic planning process has three phases:

Phase 1* Study and Planning
Phase 2 Implementation
Phase 3 Special Projects

During Phase 1, the building will study various aspects of their school before they plan! "Understanding the problem or need," means asking: What factors are preventing all students from achieving high standards?

Six readiness activities are listed below. These are a good place to start. A timeline identifies key dates. Use the question and ideas section to pose questions.

Readiness Activities for Buildings:

  1. Identify your distributed leadership/planning team – lead teachers and site evaluators.
  2. Share and discuss the Seven Attributes with both the staff and site council.
  3. Reconsider your current learning improvement plan in terms of the Seven Attributes.
  4. Review your current technology plan.
  5. Begin the process of analyzing student data on demographics, achievement, perceptions, and school processes for learning and assessment.
  6. Familiarize yourself with the district strategic planning format and board policy 2004.

* Buildings that identified themselves as being in Phase 2 in the spring of 2000, will use their current strategic plans as the basis for implementation during year one of the Gates Grant. Revisions will be made as a result of an analysis of current data and an alignment with the attributes.
