BELLINGHAM – The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced awards for 17 of the Bellingham School District's top scholars based on their performance on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) last fall.
National Merit Semifinalists are students who have the highest scores in Washington state and represent less than 1 percent of the state's graduating class. They are Bellingham High School students Casey Oswald, John McCallen and Andrew Short.
National Merit Commended students from Sehome High School are Anthony Fisher, Derek Franklin, Sean Grant, Kelly Lesoing, Joel Prickett and Lauren Zegers; and from Bellingham High School, students Kristina Gallant, Zach Mullen, Robert Ochs and Evan Whitfield; and from Squalicum High School, Leah Congdon, Philip Corrigan, Paul Jacobchuk and Kevin Uy. Commended students placed among the top 5 percent of more than one million students who entered the 2005 competition by taking the 2003 PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
