BELLINGHAM – Students and families of Columbia and Parkview elementary schools are encouraged to participate in activities to celebrate International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 6.
Parkview Elementary received a $1,000 grant this summer from the Whatcom Physical Activity Coalition to establish a new walk to school program. Parkview will have a before-school celebration station by the back door on Oct. 6 for students, staff and families. A Walk and Roll to School campaign will begin with Fitness Fridays on Oct. 15 to encourage everyone to make an extra effort to walk or bike to school.
Columbia Elementary will host a breakfast party outside the school at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 6 for students, staff and families to kick off its annual Walk and Roll to School campaign. Columbia's campaign began in 2003 with support from the Mt. Baker Bicycle Club and a Regence BlueShield grant.
“The event is designed to create growing awareness about the benefits of fresh air, less traffic, stronger neighborhoods and spending more quality time as a family by walking or biking together to school,” says Susan Gardner, Columbia parent and one of the event organizers.
