Rebinds
In
the rebinding process, the covers and end papers are removed,
the edges of the pages are “shaved” and washed, and new covers
and end papers are applied. Rebind costs are taken from your
book budget.
Consider
rebinding a book if it meets Criteria #1 and several
additional criteria:
Criteria:
- It
meets BPS Instructional Materials standards
- The
binding is falling apart
- The
pages are in excellent shape
- It
circulates well
- It
is difficult, impossible, or very costly to replace
- It
is an essential part of the library collection
- It
is more cost-effective to have it rebound than to purchase
a new copy
A
standard (not oversized) book will usually cost between $8
and $9. Generic “wallpaper-print” covers are supplied, unless
the book is quite recent. Consider this in your decision to
rebind.
Processing
rebinds:
- Create
a patron named Bindery (YEAR)
- Check
the book out to the Bindery patron.
- Write
the barcode on the title page of the book, about ½”
from the gutter. Be sure your school stamp is on the title
page.
- Save
the book jacket for use on the book when it returns from
the bindery, or scan, cover and create a new book jacket.
- Hold
at your school until May 15. Library Media & Technology
sends books to the bindery only in June.
- Print
2 copies of the transaction list for the Bindery patron.
The list should include title, barcode, and call number
of each book to be rebound. Put one copy of the list with
the rebinds, save one for your files.
- There
is no minimum number of books you can send, but Library
Media & Technology must have at least 50 before an order
can go to the bindery.
- Send
the books and list to Library Media & Technology in
the school delivery. E-mail
LMT (Hubbard) to alert them the books are coming.
- When
they are returned from the Bindery, Library Media &
Technology will put call numbers on the spine and a new
barcode on the book. There is no charge for this service.
Let Library Media & Technology know if you want barcodes
and spine labels sent separately (for example, if you are
putting on a new dust jacket).
- When
the books are returned to your library.
- Check
the books against the list you printed earlier, to account
for all books
- Check
the books in, using the old barcode number, not the
new one on the front of the book.
- If
you wrote the old barcode number on the title page,
put a line through it and write the new number beside
it. There are occasions where it's helpful to know what
the old barcode number was.
- Stamp
your school stamp on the usual places.
- Update
the MARC record copy to reflect the new number.
- Edit
or enhance the MARC record before it goes back on the
shelf.
