Patron Management

  • For overdue reports, read Destiny documentation on the subject open the Patrons tab of Reports in the Back Office and select Checked Out/Overdue Materials & Unpaid Fines. For further information, click the help icon or go to Destiny online help and search on "overdue report." Follow the directions outlined in the document.

 

Elementary Media Center Preparation

  • Library Scheduling: coordinate with music and PE scheduling and work with teachers on special needs. Leave Monday afternoons unscheduled after 1:30 to accommodate monthly district LMS meetings and occasional training.
  • Library schedule will include at least a weekly 30 minute release time for grades 3-5. Classroom teacher should accompany K-2 students for all library sessions. There are a variety of scheduling models in use across the district.
  • Flexible scheduling in the computer lab is encouraged. Teachers may sign up and teach their own technology classes in the lab or may team with the LMS.
  • Plan with Library Assistant for on-going duties and responsibilities
  • Recruit and train parent volunteers
  • Student Helpers Training (optional). Design the training based on the job needs. Check with other ELMS on how they use student volunteers.

 

Student Accounts

  • Network services will provide a spreadsheet of student accounts and passwords. Refer to "Make Your Own Label" directions in Outlook Tech Tips.
  • Order student Internet/e-mail permission slips from Karen Lofton.
  • File and save all returned, signed permission slips.
  • Send last year's 5 th grade permission slips to the feeder middle school LMS if this hasn't already been done.

 

First month library sessions

  • Share literature through read-aloud.
  • Library procedures: check out procedures, check out limits, placing holds, how to do independent check out, when library is open, behavior expectations
  • Location and use of materials
  • Appropriate computer uses during library sessions: searching for books, use of e-mail, Internet usage limits?
  • Book care and computer care
  • What's new in library

 

First Lab Activities

  • Schedule lab time for grades 3-5 classes for logon introduction, generally starting with grade 5.
  • Schedule another lab or library time to go over rules and responsibilities of network and Internet use. Hand out Internet/e-mail permission slips to all grade 3 students and those in grades 4 and 5 who do not have a current Internet account.
  • Work with teachers to set times for Keyboarding instruction.

 

Other Fall Library Sessions

  • Introduce or review Library Search strategies: keyword, title, author, series, subject, visual.
  • Introduce or review computer programs that students may use independently during library sessions.
  • Book talk new books and have students share good books they have read over the summer.
  • Introduce Sasquatch Award Nominees if you plan to participate. See WLMA homepage (www.wlma.org)
