The Highly Capable Learners’ Program
recognizes that all learning needs a foundation of basic
skills, content, and learning strategies, and that students
have different needs and learn at different rates. In
order for a highly capable student to reach his/her
potential, which is consistent with the District’s
Mission and Vision statements, we believe that supplemental
educational services to those provided by the regular
school program, are necessary.
Nominations
for the HCL program may be made by self, parents, teachers,
students, or community members. Nomination forms are
available at each school, the HCL office at the Roeder
Administration Building, 676-6542, or by clicking on
the Nomination Form link on the right. The nomination
process includes an evaluation of previous standardized
test scores and anecdotes. Completion of
the screening process requires parent notification and
permission for testing. The
test, given twice a year, in October and March,
measures creative and critical thinking skills and academic
achievement. A multi-disciplinary
team, consisting of a district administrator, gifted teacher, and HCL test facilitator, evaluates the test results.
Students are then identified for services in
the HCL Program according to state and district guidelines.
