Attendees : Sheila Fox, Chuck Atkins, Sandy Austin, Vicky Hubner, Shirley Potter, Richard Snyder, Dale Kinsley, and Adrienne Nelson

 

Goal of the Steering Committee: To create a framework for an effective partnership between BSD, NVSD and WWU that outlines the links needed to provide a seamless process of induction for new teachers.

 

Partnership Outcome : To ensure that teachers can demonstrate a positive impact on student learning by providing a seamless support mechanism from pre-service through the first five years of teaching.

 

 

ANALYSIS OF CURRENT ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF DISTRICT AND UNIVERSITY IN THE INDUCTION PROCESS/EXPERIENCES

Pre-service Program (Residency Certificate)

First-year and second/third year induction period

Professional Certificate and beyond

•  WWU Performance Based Analysis (Grid of classes and how they connect to performance standards)

•  WAC Standards (180.78A.270)

•  WWU – Basic Skills Test for pedagogy, content and basic skills

•  Teaching Standards – WAC

•  INTASC – Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support 10 Principles

•  Critical areas of assistance have been identified in which mentors are to provide training, strategies, and guidance to new teachers:

•  Classroom Management

•  Discipline

•  Instruction and Assessment

•  Professional Conduct

•  EALRs

•  State Standards for Professional Certification:

•  Comprehensive Learning Instruction Plan

•  Positive Impact Plan

•  Family Involvement Plan

•  Classroom Inquiry Plan

•  Professional Growth Plan and Record

PROCESS

Pre-service Program (Residency Certificate)

First-year and second/third year induction period

Professional Certificate and beyond

•  WWU Students participate in a Field base student teaching experience

•  WWU Students participate in 2 field based practica for each course

•  WWU students must pass a content test in order to enter the Education Degree Program

•  Secondary WWU must develop a portfolio

•  Post Bac students have year long experience in one school

•  BSD, NVSD, and WWU will partner for 3 years to match the level of development with the standards

•  New Teachers attend orientation sessions before school starts

•  BSD provides New Teacher Monthly Seminars on district curriculum, assessment, policies, and practices

•  BSD and NVSD have mentor program that provides training, strategies, and guidance to new teachers

•  BSD and NVSD Mentors and new teachers have release time to observe each other

•  BSD Administrators have training about the mentoring program

•  BSD – Critical Friends Groups

•  BSD – 10 Elementary Schools have Teacher Leaders to support the development of teacher understandings about teaching and learning in literacy

•  BSD Lead Teachers

•  BSD and NVSD Mentor Academy training for mentors

•  BSD Core Courses, Inservices (DRA, DRP, Six Trait Scoring for Writing)


 

IDENTIFIED NEEDS/NEXT STEPS

•  Clarify the State Standards for the large group  

•  Develop a common language and understanding of the standards.

 

•  Clarify for the Partnership the WWU Pre Service Program

•  Develop a process for meshing the theory with the practices in the classroom

 

•  Align the contents (standards and expectations) with the processes being implemented in BSD and NVSD

 

 

•  Examine Charlotte Danielson's rubrics

•  Clarify the Professional Certification Program for the large committee

 

•  Identify structures and contingencies (mentors, lead teachers, administrators, and WWU personnel) that need to understand and partner in order to implement the Professional Certification Program

 

•  Develop the roles and responsibilities of the partners

 

 

•  Align WWU Seminar Content with Content of mentor training

 

Next Steps for the Partnership Steering Committee:

 

Adrienne - Change Large Group meeting date to Oct. 9 th at 3:30 PM, Check on room availability and send out notices of change of date and confirm place.

 

Sheila – Present WWU Certification Process and Standards – What are the “Givens”? (State and Pre Service Standards). Provide the large group with an opportunity to work in mixed groups to increase understandings about standards. Perhaps bring in Charlotte Danielson's rubrics to consider any matches with standards.
