INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS COMMITTEE

Minutes from Meeting Held on October 26, 2004

Attendees: Ann Buswell, Dave Adams, Carolyn O'Donnell, Adrienne Nelson, and Nancy Messmer

•  Welcome

Adrienne Nelson reviewed the role of the Instructional Materials Committee and the Policy and Procedures 2311 Instructional Materials

•  The following materials and presentations have been reviewed by the IMC and recommended for use in the Bellingham Public Schools:

Science

Biology – Sehome, Bellingham and Squalicum High Schools

Recommended

Silent Spring by Rachel Carson for non-basic instructional materials - 10 th Grade Biology

Health and Fitness and Family Psychology and Science

Presentations

Dating Violence outlines and packets for a 90-minute class period and a 50-minute class period. This is a new curriculum for the high school level and may be used in combination with the Sexual Assault presentation. The video that accompanies this presentation is Dating Violence, The Hidden Secret.

Sexual Assault Acquaintance Rape presentation has not changed. Two new videos are Playing the Game and Gonna Make it.

Drug Facilitated Sexual Assault is a new presentation. It may only be used for the High School population and only in combination with the Sexual Assault Presentation. The video that is used with this presentation is Date Rape Drugs – What You Need to Know .

Decision

All three presentations were approved for use in the High Schools. The video, Dating Violence, The Hidden Secret is still being reviewed by the committee members for recommendation at the November meeting.

•  Next Steps

The next IMC meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 30 th , at 4 PM at Roeder Administration Building in room 204. Before the meeting, the members will review the Planned Parenthood Presentation for Middle School and the video, Dating Violence, The Hidden Secret.
