NOVEL SETS

READ ALOUDS

A novel is read to a class.

The teacher models reading strategies.

The teacher explains their thinking about their reading.

The teacher has their students reflect upon the reading.

 

 

INDEPENDENT READING

 

Use

Purpose(s)

Students choose a novel to read on their own time, during silent and sustained reading (SSR), etc.

Students increase their reading skills through practice.

Students become familiar with a variety of genres.

Students choose their novels based on interest.

 

 

LITERATURE CIRCLES

 

Use

Purpose(s)

Students read and discuss a novel in depth by working in small groups typically ranging from 5-10 students.

Students increase their reading skills through reflection with a group of other students.

Students become familiar with a variety of genres.

Students chose or are assigned novels based on interest, theme, reading level, teaching point, etc.
