MEETING MINUTES

Members present:  Dave Adams, John Mangan, Tom Pollino, Jacque Eillig, Lella Rose, Adrienne Nelson, Ann Reed    Guests:  Sonja Morrison, Jennifer Cowan, Deanne Thorsvik

• Welcome:  Adrienne announced the completion of terms for Dave Adams, Ann Buswell, Tom Pollino, and Lella Rose, with a special thank you for their time and service.

• Review of new French Text:  Sonja Morrison, French teacher from Sehome, presented the new textbook series, Discovering French.  She walked the committee through the evaluation forms addressing each item to the committee’s interests.  The request centered on the revision and update of the current text, which was purchased in 1992.  Several texts were considered by the French teachers across the district, and this text was the teachers’ first choice.  After questions were answered to the satisfaction of the committee, the group recommended approval of the textbook adoption.

• Review of Bullying Prevention Program:  Jennifer Cowan, counselor from Shuksan Middle School answered questions from the committee members concerning the Bullyproofing Your Schools materials under consideration for adoption.  The program was introduced during our previous meeting by Kenn Robinson, Director of Student Services.  Jennifer noted that the strengths of the bullying program are the common language and understandings that students and staff develop to identify and name bullying behaviors.  She also identified the role of the “bystander” and how the program provides instruction in tapping that group of students to engage in anti-bullying behaviors and support of other students in the victim role.  The committee recommended to approve the adoption of Bullyproofing Your Schools at the Middle School level.

• Closing:  Adrienne presented next year’s meeting dates and an appeal for new members.
