• Members present: Linda Chapman, Laura Rink, John Mangan, Anne Seeger, Susan Hofstetter, Jean Prochaska, Yvonne Sorter, Ann Reed, Carol Egan
• Guests present: Barbara Rusch, David Engle, Janet Diener, Debra Knudsen

• Sex Smart for Teens-DVDs

o Sexual Transmitted Infections
o Birth Control
o Abstinence
o Janet Diener provided background information for the adoption. Several of the currently used materials are outdated by over 15 years. The information is not only out of date and incorrect, but out of date for student engagement. Debra Knudsen also noted that the students shut down when viewing the out of date materials. They view the material as their parents’ issues not theirs. Barbara Rusch added that the hairstyles and dress of the characters distract from the content of the video. David Engle added that these DVDs will add to the students’ knowledge and safety issues. The best and accurate information is important, and kids need good information.
o All the high schools will be using these DVDs as they will be stored in the district media center. It is optional that teachers use these resources.
o Discussion followed with the committee members that concerned the content and message of the DVDs. Committee voted to approve the materials.

• Preview of materials for May 29th meeting

• The Face of AIDS: Ask Janet Diener and other heath teachers to preview the DVD for merit in the AIDS prevention program.
• Hazardous Wastes and Toxic Solutions video will be shared with the science teachers.
• Carol and Jean will draft a recommendation for the committee to review procedures for sources of information from vendors or publishers, rather than staff.
