In the Bellingham School District, teachers believe that reading is constructing meaning from text. This belief drives the teacher's practice resulting in readers who interact with the text and use strategies to read in a variety of text. Teachers must understand the reading process and five core essential elements that comprise the District Reading Program and use instructional strategies and program approaches that ensure student success as a reader. The BSD reading curriculum is aligned with the State of Washington Essential Academic Learning Requirements and Grade Level Expectations.
