Social Studies Curriculum

The K-8 Social Studies curriculum was approved by the Bellingham School Board in June 2001. The World Geography - Grade 9 curriculum was approved by the Board in March 2004. The High School Social Studies Committee will continue a review of the social studies curriculum for Grades 10-12.

District curriculum guides are a resource for teachers when planning their teaching. Critical content describes topics, ideas and components that are being studied at each grade level (see links on the right).

Social Studies Philosophy Statement: The purpose of social studies is to help students in the Bellingham School District become knowledgeable, lifelong learners with the ability to make informed and responsible decisions as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic and global society. In the words of Thomas Jefferson, the purpose of social studies education is to help each student to “assume the office of citizen.”
