Review of new elementary science kits
Current science kits are 10+ years old. Science expectations have changed since then, so a new science program kits are needed. The new program helps student think like scientists and provide robust teacher support materials. This is an awareness presentation of the kits.
Jean presented information on the kits and programs. There is a beginning use in all the elementaries, as the kits have been on loan from WWU. Pilot plan calls for the use of Variables kit at Grade 5, and the Measurement kit at Grades 2 and 3. These kits match the state GLEs in science, and the Measurement kit meets both Science and Math GLEs. These two kits are being planned for purchase for this fall.
Review of Bullying Prevention Program:
Kenn Robinson presented information on the Bully Program. It is a spiral curriculum that has been used in at the middle school level. There has been district data that behavior intervention data has increased in the last few years and has increased at the elementary level. The programs, “Steps to Respect” (K-5) and “Bully Proofing Your School” (6-8) have been piloted in the district. Teachers and principals have provided positive feedback on the programs. Kenn will provide the materials for check out and will return next meeting for further questions.
The Committee will evaluate the curriculum as a “basic” material and use the two forms, evaluation and the bias screening form. Please check in with Cindy in the Curriculum office to stop by the office to review the curriculum or check in with the ESS or counselor in the pilot buildings. Please review both curriculum materials separately for next meeting.
