Washington State Math High School Graduation Requirements

For students in the Classes of 2010-2012 WA State requires:

  • Students must pass the math high school WASL/WAAS (Washington Alternate Assessment System) OR
  • Meet standard on a math Collection of Evidence OR
  • Submit a score of 19 or higher on the math ACT, 47 or higher on the math PSAT, 470 or higher on the math SAT, or 3 or higher on calculus or statistics Advanced Placement course exams OR
  • Earn two math credits after 10th grade and annually take (not necessarily pass) the high school math WASL/WAAS, submit a complete math Collection of Evidence, or take (not necessarily pass) the math ACT, math PSAT, math SAT, or a calculus or statistics AP exam.

For students in the Class of 2013 (this year's high school freshmen) WA State requires:

  • Earning 3 credits in Math, including Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II or Integrated Math I, II, and III.*
  • Passing the math high school WASL/WAAS  OR
  • Meeting standard on a math Collection of Evidence OR
  • Submitting a score of 19 or higher on the math ACT, 470 or higher on the math SAT, or 3 or higher on calculus or statistics Advanced Placement course exams OR
  • Passing end-of course exams in Algebra I and Geometry or end-of-course exams in Integrated Math I and II. (Source: Office of Superintendent and Public Instruction)

*Note: After students take Algebra I and Geometry (or Integrated Math I and II), they may elect a third credit of math different from Algebra II or Integrated Math III if the choice is consistent with the career-oriented program of study identified in the student's High School and Beyond Plan.  The decision to take a different thrid credit of math requires that the student, parent or guardian, and a school official meet formally, discuss requirements for two- and four-year colleges, and sign a form acknowledging that the math of choice is more suited to the student's education and career goals.

Whatcom County School Districts' Math Graduation Requirements

Bellingham Public Schools

Classes 2010-2012

  • 2 Credits of Math-recommended courses to fulfill this requirement are Algebra I and Geometry.
  • Meet the state requirments listed above.

Beginning with Class 2013

  • 3 Credits of Math through Algebra II
  • Meet state minimum proficiency standards in math on state assessments.  Students who do not pass the state assessement must pass math courses through their senior year or through Algebra II until they meet proficiency in math as demonstrated on the state assessment.

Blaine School District

  • 2 credits of Math to include Algebra I and Geometry or the CTE equivalent.
  • Meet the state requirements listed above.

Ferndale Schools

  • 2 Credits of Math to include Algebra I and Geometry
  • Meet the state requirements listed above.

Lynden School District 504

  • 3 Credits of Math with the recommended course sequence to include Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II.
  • Meet the state requirements listed above.

Lynden Christian Schools

  • 3.5 Credits of Math or 7 semesters

Meridian School District

  • 2 Credits of Math to include Algebra I or higher
  • Meet the state requirements listed above.

Mount Baker School District

  • 3 Credits of Math
  • 10th Grade Year: Students are double blocked for math.
  • Meet the state requirements listed above.

Nooksack Valley School District

  • 2 Credits of Math to include Integrated Math I and Integrated Math II.
  • Meet the state requirements listed above.

Math Placement Exams

Bellingham Technical College

Whatcom Community College

WCC has created its own math placement exam.  For more information click here Online Math Center.

Western Washington University

Incoming freshmen must have three years of math, including geometry and two years of Algebra beyond pre-algebra.  Most students are required to take the Math Placement Test.  There are two levels of this test, Intermediate and Advanced.  To view sample problems and test objectives for both levels click here Practice Problems.  For more information visit Western Washington University's Testing Center.
